Sengstock, Jr. has, since the early 1960s, researched and written extensively about the development of jazz in Chicago. Sengstock has donated some 1,200 items, including reel-to-reel and cassette tapes, LPs, 78s, 45s, books, a few transcriptions and a small selection of sheet music. Emphasizing Chicago dance bands from their beginnings, the collection includes rare, non-commercial tapes of performances from such famed local venues as the Aragon and Willowbrook ballrooms, as well as commercial recordings of bandleaders associated with Chicago and manuscript notes.
