Kevin Bacon, who turns 60 on July 8, started his award-winning career as a frat boy in National Lampoon’s Animal House, starred in a few soap operas, and then became one of the first victims in Friday the 13th. From there, his career went onto many critically acclaimed and controversial roles, and he even has a band, The Bacon Brothers.
And, of course, he's also the subject of a trivia game called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, which maintains everyone in Hollywood is linked within six degrees through their association with Bacon. Because of this, there's an actual mathematical formula known as the “Bacon Scale.”
Here are four Bacon gems, including three movies based on books.
A Stir of Echoes was first a terrifying novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, one of Stephen King’s all-time favorite novelists. Bonus: This creeper is set in Chicago.
Mystic River, based on a book of the same name, looks at the aftermath of a murder on a blue-collar neighborhood in Boston.
Sleepers, based on a book of the same name, is a horrific look at the inside of a children’s prison in New York, where four young men’s lives are destroyed.
Bacon took home a Golden Globe for his portrayal of a soldier taking a fellow veteran’s remains home in Taking Chance. This movie is heartbreaking and essential.
