Lewis Carroll's beloved fantasy story Alice in Wonderland has delighted children for 150 years. Alice is loved not only on paper, but also on the stage.
In 1898, Burton Harrison brought Alice in Wonderland to life in three acts at the request of "kind ladies" caring for ailing children at a London hospital. By the time Carroll's child heroine turned 50 in 1915, her story had been adapted for the stage nearly 30 times.
In February 1915, Alice Gerstenberg brought her interpretation of Alice in Wonderland to the Fine Arts Theatre stage in Chicago. Tickets could be purchased for as little as a quarter, with the best seats costing $1.50. Deemed a "splurge of imagination" (on page 9) by the Chicago Examiner, the production enjoyed a successful run.
