Any pet owner will tell you that animals exhibit profound sensitivity to the needs and emotions of their humans. In celebration of this year's One Book, One Chicago selection (Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay) here are some books that celebrate animal heroes:
Man's Best Hero shares stories of ordinary dogs doing extraordinary things- including dogs who saved their owners from freezing to death in a pond, being shot to death by a drug-crazed gang member, and one who assumed the role of crossing guard for elementary school children.
Soldier Dogs is a fascinating book about dogs in our military- their training, accomplishments, and the bonds they form with soldiers.
For cat people, Cat Miracles highlights cats who exemplify survival, courage, and unbelievable heroism.
Finally, dogs and cats aren't the only animals that exhibit altruism- Unlikely Heroes tells the stories of several different animals, including a pod of dolphins that shielded a group of swimmers from a great white shark.
