Reigning queen of celebrity breakup songs, Taylor Swift, just announced that her new album, 1989, will be released October 27. Of all her confessional tunes, "Dear John" is my favorite. She really stuck it to John Mayer on this track from 2010's Speak Now. Well...allegedly the song was about him. Ahem. "Don't you think I was too young to be messed with?" she accuses. Ouch.
Taylor certainly wasn't the first songwriter to get the last word in a pop song. Carly Simon penned her infamous "You're So Vain" in 1972 and critics still speculate about which self-absorbed celeb boyfriend she was calling out. Was it Warren Beatty or Mick Jagger? Either way, the song, found on her Reflections CD, still satisfies heartbroken listeners.
I still can't believe that Alanis Morissette ever dated Dave Coulier, AKA Uncle Joey from Full House. But the song she wrote about their breakup remains an anthem for angst-ridden women everywhere. Check it out on 1995's Jagged Little Pill.
Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears made the cutest little Mousketeer couple, until she allegedly cheated on him. He got revenge with "Cry Me a River" from 2002's Justified. Some say the gal in the video looks an awful lot like Britney.
Who knows which ex Beyonce told off in "Irreplaceable," one of 2008's Grammy Nominees. But if you believe tabloid gossip, Jay Z might find his expensive duds in a box to the left very soon.
What's your favorite breakup song?
