Celebrate Pi Day

March is here, and it's time to party! Is it Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day or March Madness, you say? While those events usually occur in March, I'm talking about a different holiday. Get out your calculators—it's time to celebrate Pi Day!

What's that, you may ask? Think back to geometry class... Pi is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Pi is approximately equal to 3.14159 and usually is shortened to 3.14, but it could go on forever. It has been represented by the Greek letter "π" since the mid-1700s, although it is usually spelled out as "pi."

Pi Day is celebrated around the world on March 14, which also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday, but why celebrate the theory of relativity when you can celebrate a holiday by eating pie instead?

Now that we have the mathematics figured out, how does one celebrate Pi Day? In the film [Pi], a brilliant mathematician believes mathematics is the language of nature and that everything can be understood through numbers. If you study the numbers of any system, patterns emerge. Might I suggest looking around you at things that are round. Bake a batch of cookies, slice up a pie, order a pizza...the possibilities are endless. In the meantime, take a look at these materials to help get your proverbial pi juices flowing!
