Being raised by Star Trek and sci-fi/fantasy geeks meant knowing the title of a TNG (Star Trek: The Next Generation) episode 10 seconds in and keeping mostly quiet about many of the TV shows I watched and most of the books I read. It was not until adulthood that I found other like-minded people. The odd thing...many of these like-minded adults went to high school with me! This Sunday, July 13...don't judge...celebrate Embrace Your Inner Geek Day with these titles.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell tells the story of a college freshman who would rather live in and expand on the world created by another instead of creating or living in her own. This is a must-read for story geeks.
Although this book is intended for the ladies, guys, don't let the title scare you away. Leslie Simon’s book, Geek Girls Unite, has lists of music, books and blogs that are sure to interest most varieties of geek regardless of gender.
Redshirts is at the top of my to-read list and should be for any Star Trek geek. John Scalizi’s story focuses on a Universal Union ensign who questions the high death rate of low-ranking officers on away missions.
For your geeky pleasure, I found a clip of Wil Wheaton and Scalizi doing a reading from Redshirts at Burbank Public Library.
What type of geek are you? How are you going to embrace your inner geek?
