One of the best ways to start feeling more independent is to learn how to make your own meals, just the way you like them! Besides, cooking is unequivocally YOU TIME. Spend your time in the kitchen decompressing—press play on your favorite album or podcast, and just focus on the cooking project in front of you. It doesn’t hurt that when you’re finished, you get to eat something seriously tasty that maybe has your own personal flair.
It’s hard to know where to start when figuring out who you are in the kitchen. Do you like to cook or bake more? What is that one sauce you think is amazing on everything? What kitchen gadget drives you crazy? All of these questions are part of your journey to being your own personal chef.
One way to get started is to read cookbooks and see what catches your eye (and stomach). There are a ton of cookbooks just for teens that teach the basics and build from there, so let's dig in!
The Complete Cookbook for Teen Chefs is the best. It starts with a whole section on basic cooking how-to's and the down-low on what kitchen gear is needed for different projects. This book is multi-ethnic and does not assume that "introductory" means boring. You'll be cooking dishes from all around the world in no time.
Food Anatomy is beautifully graphic throughout and is more than just a cookbook. It combines basic cooking guidelines with a history of cuisine from around the world and of the plants and animals that make these dishes up. You'll learn so much about where flavors originate and about the people who create them.
For gamers and teens who are fans of the franchise, there's now The Official Stardew Valley Cookbook. Make all of your favorite cozy recipes from the farm, each presented by a different character. If nothing else, come for the gorgeous food photography!
Are you more dessert inclined? Try out The Super Easy Teen Baking Cookbook. This covers everything you'll need for the oven—muffins, breads, cookies, bars, cakes, pies and tarts. YUM!
