The quintessential teen movie from the 1980s is well out of its teens and nearing middle-age. The John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club is the story of five teens from different social groups (a jock, a brain, a princess, a criminal and a basket case) thrown together and eventually bonding during a Saturday morning detention.
Kids from the 1980s were able to see a bit of themselves in each of these characters and were in awe of their audacity. Who among us didn't want a pixie stick sandwich for lunch or try putting lipstick on without using their hands after watching this movie? Here is a list of movies that capture the spirit of high school.
Mean Girls tells the classic tale of a girl falling out of favor with the popular clique. Just like in The Breakfast Club, it doesn't matter if you were the mean girl or the girl being tormented, it's easy to see a bit of ourselves in any of these characters.
Easy A, a dark comedy about a girl trading in her reputation for profit, features the outstanding Emma Stone, who has the Molly Ringwald quality of being an "everygirl," albeit, a slightly cooler, prettier, everygirl.
The Perks of Being A Wallflower is a story about an observer who is forced to become a participant in life after falling in with a fearless and free-spirited crowed. Teens, this was the 1980s. Mix tapes and midnight viewings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show!
Because we are all jocks, brains, princesses, criminals and basket cases. Have fun!
