Everyone has an origin story about when they discovered the magic of books. It could have been as a child during a story time at daycare or that special teacher who gifted a book from their own collection when they sensed that your interest was waning. Loving to read meant we were constantly returning to our libraries, schools, bookstores and other places where we know we can restock our supply. As we temporarily search out online destinations to meet that need, take a moment to ask the people around you for their stories. Oral histories are just as important as the written ones.
StoryCorp’s mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. They sometimes develop an animation to help people imagine and visualize stories through each other’s eyes. Here are three great ones to get the conversation started.
The Treasures of Mrs. Grady’s Library is a story of trying to be cool even if reading is your thing.
The Bookmobile tells of a young laborer who needs books like she needs to eat.
The Temple of Knowledge tells the story of a kid who actually got to live in a library!
Share with each other your first experiences with reading and then let us know all about what you have learned about each other in the comments!
