New Books by Latine Authors

National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated form September 15th to October 15th, provides an excellent opportunity to explore some of the newest books by Latine authors.  With Hispanic heritage being so vast and diverse, it is no surprise our book choices cover a wide array of genres and stories. Whether you are interested in a down-to-earth look at another's experiences, or you want to step into a world unlike our own, you are sure to enjoy the fresh perspectives each Latine author has to offer. Below are a few of the new books in our catalog written by Latine authors:

Just Another Story by Ernesto Saade is a nonfiction graphic novel that follows the author's cousin, Carlos, and his mother on their migration to the United States from El Salvador. Saade is consistently blown away by the events Carlos and his mother went through, like crossing a treacherous river and being held for ransom. Still, Carlos insists it is just like any other immigration story, humanizing the complexities of immigration and what it takes to make that journey.

Hearts of Fire and Snow by David Bowles and Guadalupe García McCall is a fantasy romance that draws inspiration from ancient Aztec tales. Each chapter alternates between Blanca Montes, the most recent reincarnation of Princess Iztac who does not yet know of her ancient identity or previous lives, and Greg Chan, the reincarnation of Captain Popoca who is trying to piece together his history while getting Blanca to remember hers. Romance fans are sure to enjoy this magical love story that has lasted lifetimes.

Daniel, Deconstructed by James Ramos follows Daniel, an autistic boy with a passion for film, as he attempts to play matchmaker for two of his friends whom he believes have "Main Character Energy." Daniel has always seen himself as the director —the one behind the camera who sets the scene but never takes the spotlight. However, his friends are determined to prove to him that he doesn't need to mask his true self to be accepted. Playing on classic coming-of-age movie tropes, like love triangles and meet-cutes, this novel defies expectation as Daniel learns that while films are relatable, they are not accurate representations of real life.

Relit is an anthology edited by Sandra Proudman containing 16 short-story retellings of classic stories, tales, and myths told by a variety of Latine authors. Not only do the characters of well-known stories feel fresh and new, but they are sprinkled with some sci-fi, fantasy and horror elements. The best part about this series is you don't have to have read the original stories to appreciate and enjoy the creativity.
