During the month of April, people all over the country will gather to ponder, reflect, write, read, listen and share the art of poetry. Heralded as the largest literary celebration in the world by the Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month has been celebrated since 1996. This year Chicago Public Library in collaboration with the Poetry Foundation will host acclaimed poet, activist and educator Sonia Sanchez at our 15th annual Poetry Fest on Saturday, April 26. Now while I'll bet dollars to doughnuts you've heard of National Poetry Month, have you heard of Poem in Your Pocket Day?
Another fun way to celebrate poetry in April is by participating in Poem in Your Pocket Day. On this day, people throughout the United States select a poem they love and share it with friends, family and coworkers. Poem in Your Pocket Day 2014 will be held Thursday, April 24. Need some help on picking out a good poem to share? Poem in your Pocket contains 200 poems to read and carry.
Here are some ways you can participate in Poem in Your Pocket Day:
- Hand out poem postcards in your school, office or anywhere you frequent during the day.
- Add a poem to your email footer.
- Mail a poem to a friend.
- Post a poem on your blog or social networking page with the hashtag #pocketpoem.
