This weekend is C2E2, the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, where fans of comics, television and movies gather to celebrate pop culture. Started in 2010, C2E2 hosts a Family Headquarters where even the youngest fans can partake in pop culture-themed activities.
You can be ready for C2E2 by checking out some great books from the worlds of science fiction, fantasy and comics.
The 501st Legion, a costuming club with a mission to promote interest in all things Star Wars, will host a Nerf Blaster arena in the family area. Get in the Star Wars spirit by learning more about the many unique beings that make up the Star Wars universe in the Star Wars Character Encyclopedia.
Star Wars has had a lasting impact on popular culture since it was first introduced to the world in 1977 and has even had an impact on arts and crafts, including origami, as seen in ART2-D2's Guide to Folding and Doodling, an activity book inspired by Tom Angleberger's Origami Yoda series.
If you prefer the fantasy side of pop culture, grab your broomstick and brush up on your Quidditch history with Quidditch Through the Ages before playing a real life game of Kidditch, or kid's Quidditch, the most popular sport played in the world of Harry Potter.
C2E2 is also known for bringing in famous guests ranging from comic book artists, novel writers and television and movie actors for fans to mingle and take photos with. One notable guest this year is Stan Lee, the prolific creator of well known Marvel characters such as Spider-Man and the Hulk and the writer of one of my favorite books from my childhood, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. This book is a classic and shows some of the basics of creating comics.
Stan Lee has been creating exciting characters and adventurous stories for decades, and he's still at it as seen in his new novel for children, The Zodiac Legacy, a book that follows a kid who gets mixed up in a plot to control 12 superpowers tied to the signs of the Chinese zodiac.
