On July 9, the wonderful, versatile actor, filmmaker and producer Tom Hanks will turn a fabulous 60! For this Throwback Thursday, let's look back at this amazing talent and touch on some of his extensive filmography that began in the 1980s.
Over the years, I've enjoyed several of his movies and characters, and am truly thankful for his work and contribution to the arts. Although for my children he may be the voice of Woody in the Toy Story trilogy (can't wait for No. 4 in a couple years!), for me he is the brave, loving soul in Philadelphia who exposed me to fear, prejudice and injustice, and the lovable, inspirational Forrest Gump who introduced me to history, love and the personal power of an individual. Even still, I can't look at a Wilson volleyball without thinking of him in Castaway.
Hanks studied theater in college before moving to New York City in 1979. He was quickly cast with a lead role in a TV show called Bosom Buddies, where he won the hearts of many—and the attention of director Steven Spielberg.
His relationship with Spielberg led to the movie Splash with Daryl Hannah and John Candy, exposing Hanks to the big screen, where he remains a pivotal force and box-office draw.
Hanks continued diversifying his acting with movies like Big, The 'burbs and A League of Their Own, priming him for more dramatic undertakings in The Green Mile and Road to Perdition.
And, Hanks shows no signs of stopping his work anytime soon and continues to delight, inspire, educate and entertain. Have a wonderful and happy birthday, Mr. Hanks! We can't wait to see what else you do!
