Celebrating the holidays wouldn't be complete without decorating gingerbread men. Just be sure your gingerbread men don't run away before you slide them into the oven or you won't have any to frost on December 13 for Gingerbread Decorating Day.
This classic story of the runaway cookie is so loved that there are many different flavors of this tasty tale.
If you prefer a southwest flavor to your gingerbread, you may enjoy The Gingerbread Cowboy. The plucky cookie manages to escape a rancher's kitchen and giddyap past cattle and javelinas before crossing the path of a clever coyote. Trickster tale meets a classic moral story in this colorful adaptation in a cowboy hat.
Assuming you already know the ill-fated tale of her brother, The Gingerbread Girl follows the gingerbread boy's little sister. A bright and smart little cookie decorated with candy and spouting clever rhymes, she just may be able to out-fox the fox in this humorous modern take on the tale.
It turns out gingerbread cookies aren't the only ones who can run away. In Runaway Radish, set during the Night of the Radishes in Mexico, chef Don Pedro wants nothing more than to win the radish carving contest. However, one spirited radish makes this tricky by deciding he doesn't want to be carved, and all the townspeople become involved in trying to catch him in this colorful chase through Mexican culture including some Spanish vocabulary.
Have fun decorating your gingerbread, but make sure you keep an eye on any boy- or girl-shaped cookies!
