In the past few years, some adorable animals have returned to the Chicago River after being gone for about 100 years. While an animal with sharp teeth and webbed feet that is part of the weasel family may not sound cute, these furry mammals love to fish, swim, slide—and play! You "otter" know by now: river otters are back in Chicago!
River otters need very clean water to be healthy. When the water is very clean, otters love to spend most of their time in it! Join the adventures of two river otter pups as they explore their sunny pond in Otters Under Water. They encounter many other animals that live in the water and even catch a snack as their mother watches on.
Another pond animal otters often spend time living near are beavers. In Hey Otter! Hey Beaver!, find out if Otter—who only wants to play—and Beaver—who only wants to build—can find a way to compromise and work together.
Read more about how Beaver and Otter Get Along...sort of as otters move in to a pond that a beaver has worked hard to build. While otters may not be a beaver's favorite neighbors, otters definitely live better when beavers are around. Ponds created by beaver dams turn into welcoming habitats for many animals, including the fish and crayfish otters eat (and eat a lot of everyday)! Be sure to check out more cool facts in the back of the book.
Follow an otter family living in an old beaver lodge as their pups are born, learn to swim, start catching fish and survive the winter in Otters Love to Play. All the skills otters have to learn are learned through play as they "ka-splash," "sliiiiiiiiide" and "swiiiiiiiiish" through life in and around their pond.
