Researchers should be aware that within each Subseries is a variety of formats of the same material. For example, within Subseries 1, Box I/11, Folder 1 contains the working papers of the Annual Report of 1950. That same Annual Report is contained in Box I/4, Folder 8 in printed form. Thus, if a researcher cannot find information for a specific date, they should check all formats within that Subseries.

Scope and Content
Boxes 1-4 date from 1872 until 1916 and were processed after the materials in Box II/1 was completed. The contents of Boxes 1-4 are primarily recommendations and regular reports issued by the Committee on Administration to the Board of Directors and cover administrative issues like staffing levels, methods of conducting library services, and the daily administration of a growing urban library. There is much information on the development of reading rooms and of staffing issues, of rates of pay, and costs of maintaining the facilities.

Committee on Delivery Stations Subseries
Historical Note
A delivery station was a location for a small collection of Library books, usually a local store, for the use of patrons in the vicinity. Storeowners were paid a nominal amount to house the books, take orders and perform basic circulation tasks. Delivery stations moved around frequently as stores changed hands, went out of business, or the demographics of the neighborhood changed. Some delivery stations catered to patrons speaking a specific language and others were administered by community organizations.
Reading Rooms were places where, in addition to a collection of Library books being available, there was space for readers to sit and read. They developed later than delivery stations but calls to provide them are present in this collection.
Scope and Content
These papers document the growth of Library service in the neighborhoods and document a dynamic time for CPL. Most files contain applications for delivery stations to be located in general neighborhoods or into specific stores but there are also files complaining about certain keepers and other administrative issues.
Arrangement
The papers were filed more or less chronologically and this organization has been maintained. Where possible the address of the delivery station (or prospective delivery station), or delivery station number, has been given. Researchers should be aware that the addresses listed here reflect Chicago before the grid system was adopted in 1908. For corresponding current addresses researchers should look at the Chicago City Directory for 1909 where an index is provided.
