Abstract

Founded in Chicago’s Edgewater community in 1980 by Judith Easton, Michael Nowak and Kathleen Thompson, Commons Theatre presented new work, classics and murder mysteries. The records document the company’s full production history of over ten seasons along with artistic and administrative files that include casting, financial information, meeting minutes, photographs, promotional materials, scripts and technical records.

Biographical/Historical

The Commons Theatre Company was founded in 1980 by two actors, Judith Easton and Michael Nowak, and a playwright, Kathleen Thompson. Originally housed in the Granada Theater building in Edgewater, they would eventually move to the Theater Building in Lakeview after a residency at Edgewater Presbyterian Church. With a strong commitment to interdisciplinary arts, community involvement, and a focus on social issues, The Commons presented both new work and classics. Reviews were generally favorable, even if sometimes the box office receipts were not.

Money was always an issue, and as a means of fundraising, Commons Theatre members wrote and produced several interactive murder mysteries tailored to their environment, including trains, the Walnut Room at Marshall Fields, and the Glessner House. Around 40% of company income came from ticket sales to all performances, and most of the rest came from private and government grants. With the loss of a few key grants and a disappointing box office for The Lower Depths, The Commons Theater Company was forced to close its doors in 1991.

Scope and Contents

The Commons Theatre Records contain production, administrative and artistic documentation spanning its operations from 1980 to 1991. The materials include box office reports, budgets, cast lists, grant proposals, invitations, meeting notes, news clippings, flyers, photos, posters, schedules, correspondence, publicity and advertising materials, photographs, negatives, contact sheets, slides, and audio recordings.

Appraisal

The original finding aid was reviewed in 2023-2024. The collection box numbers were made sequential. Previous box numbering started over with each series. The collection contents were reviewed for sensitive information, dates were inserted for file descriptions, and photographs and posters were integrated into the collection guide. The bulk of the original collection processing was retained. Materials with sensitive personal or financial identifiers were discarded or redacted.
