Biographical Note
Elwyn Blaine Gould, born in 1854, was a businessman who came to Chicago in 1879. He was an enthusiastic playgoer, who kept and annotated his programs. Though apparently not a theater professional himself, he had friends who were actors, and his programs carry notes about their Chicago appearances, as well as remarks about the size and temper of the “house,” his opinion of performances, the state of the weather, his own state of mind and an occasional assessment of the charms of various leading ladies. He evidently favored operettas, farce and variety shows, though he saw other modern plays, went to concerts and operas and saw quite a lot of Shakespeare, usually when someone he knew was in the cast. Though Gould is known to have been in Chicago at least until 1898, no programs in our collection after 1883 can be identified with certainty as his. He married in that year, so it is possible that his playgoing habits or his method of keeping programs changed.
Scope and Content
The source of this collection is unknown. Mr. Gould kept his programs intact and had them bound into volumes, only one of which survives in its original form here. Other volumes were disbound; Gould’s annotations and other characteristics made it possible to identify certain programs in the collection as his. Because Gould’s personality is so strongly expressed in his notes, it was decided to keep his programs, even the unannotated ones, together, rather than dispersing them throughout the loose program files.
Arrangement
The loose programs in the E. B. Gould Programs Collection have been arranged alphabetically by theater and then chronologically. Programs are listed with unique call numbers that combine the theater and date of each production. The scrapbook remains bound in its original order. Unique call numbers have been assigned to these programs as well, however they are listed alphabetically by production in the container list for ease of use.
Related Materials
The loose programs in Boxes 1-4 were scanned as part of a generous Chicago Public Library Foundation and Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation grant. They are available as part of Chicago Public Library’s Digital Collections.
