Historical Note
Pegasus Players is the oldest permanent cultural institution in the Uptown-Edgewater neighborhood, one of the most low-income and culturally diverse communities in Chicago. Began in 1978 under the direction of Arlene Crewdson, Pegasus grew out of a program which highlighted original student writing through faculty and student performances at the Chicago City Colleges. Touring began as a way to bring theater to groups who had no other access to live performance; Pegasus’ first outside booking was at the Cook County Jail in 1978. They were incorporated as a non-Equity theater company in 1979 and moved into a space in the Edgewater Presbyterian Church at 1020 W. Bryn Mawr. This move was contingent on their continuing commitment to the Uptown/Edgewater community.
Between 1979 and 1984, Pegasus grew from a small band of teachers and students to a company of professionals with a five or six play subscription season. In 1984, Pegasus moved into the auditorium at Truman College, tripling the size of their audience. The relationship with Truman was a unique partnership between a not-for-profit theater and a public institution. Despite the move to a larger space, Pegasus’ commitment to social and educational needs did not change. Ticket prices were kept low and an outreach program was formed to offer 20% of the tickets (per performance) free to outside groups who had little or no access to the theater, including mental health patients, recent immigrants, and students. In 1979, Pegasus received a grant from the Department of Aging and Disability enabling the coordination of a long-term program bringing live entertainment to over 40,000 seniors per year.
Pegasus’ goal of providing high quality professional theater has not changed. By 1990 they had won more Jeff Citation Awards than any other non-Equity theater in Chicago. Several of their productions such as Noises Off, The Supporting Cast, and Broadway Bound have been so successful that they have been extended at other theaters. Many of Chicago’s top designers and directors have worked at Pegasus: Jonathan Wilson, Kyle Donnelly, Erin Quigley, and Peter Gottlieb. In addition, the direction and designing team of Victoria Bussert and Russ Borski’s innovative staging of previously under-rated Sondheim musicals such as The Frogs, Anyone Can Whistle, and Merrily We Roll Along have received national attention. Pegasus’ commitment to student writing is also reflected in an annual Young Playwright’s Competition, which culminates in the professional productions of the four winners.
Scope and Content
The Chicago Theater Collection in the Special Collections Department received an initial donation of material from Pegasus Players in 1988. The Collection gives a thorough overview of the theater’s production history, though at present, there are only promotional items; the Collection does not include records from the artistic department that indicate play selection or production issues, nor are there records from the Outreach program.
Arrangement
The records of the Pegasus Players have been arranged into one series: Productions. The Productions series consists of programs, press releases, scripts and other materials relating to individual productions, arranged chronologically by season. Also included in this collection are oversize posters and photographs, which while separated physically from the manuscript material, are noted with their respective productions.
