St. Nicholas Theater Company Records

Abstract

Founded by playwright David Mamet, Patricia Cox, William H. Macy and Steven Schachter, the St. Nicholas Theater Company produced a successful and varied lineup of productions from 1972 to 1981, including Mamet originals like The Water Engine and The Woods. The collection consists of production, administrative, artistic and development records in addition to files about the St. Nicholas School of Theater Arts.

Biographical/Historical

The St. Nicholas Theater Company, named after the patron saint of street performers, mountebanks, and the theatrical demimonde, was initiated by David Mamet and two of his students at Goddard College, Steven Schacter and William H. Macy. In Chicago, Patricia Cox came on board and the theater company was formally established in 1974. According to the St. Nicholas Theater Company artistic statement, the company tried “to provide the most relevant and stimulating theater we are capable of” and originally set out to produce mostly premieres, with one classic per season. St. Nicholas Theater Company and its members would go on to win numerous awards, including several Joseph Jefferson awards and an Obie. The theater company is probably best known as the launching pad for several David Mamet plays, including American Buffalo, The Water Engine, and The Woods.

Producing theater for children and the cultivation of young artists was also important to the theater’s mission. This led to the creation of the Captain Marbles series of plays, about a troupe of actors not so different from the St. Nicholas Theater Company, as well as the School of Theater Arts, which held intensive classes for both youth and adults.

Starting in 1978, plans were made to move into the Ivanhoe Theater, two blocks north of their 2851 N. Halsted Street space. The idea was to produce mainstage shows in the new space and keep the old one for classes and more developmental productions. While ticket sales were brisk, the company went into serious debt, in part because of the attempt to lease the Ivanhoe and the projected costs the larger space would entail. Less than a year after a reshuffling of management, St. Nicholas Theater Company shut down due to financial issues in 1982.

Scope and Contents

The St. Nicholas Theater Company Collection, 1971-1982 (bulk dates 1974-1981) contains production, administrative, artistic, school and development material including scripts, set and architectural drawings, meeting notes, flyers, photos, posters, correspondence, reader’s reports, production notes, headshots, resumes, publicity and advertising materials, photographs, negatives, contact sheets and audio recordings. The collection documents all phases of the St. Nicholas Theater Company from initial plans for its first productions under Mamet and Schacter through its meteoric rise under Peter Schneider, to the winding down of the company under William Conner.

Appraisal Note

The original finding aid was reviewed in 2023. The collection box numbers were made sequential. Previous box numbering started over with each series. Box number 58 was not assigned. The index cards with phone numbers and blank and damaged cassette tapes in Box numbers 43-44 were discarded. Additionally, the collection contents were reviewed for sensitive information, dates were inserted for file descriptions, and photographs and posters were integrated into the collection guide. The bulk of the original collection processing was retained.

Scope and Contents

Series 2 includes a range of administrative planning materials created by the Board of Directors, committees, staff and with outside affiliations. The documentation includes correspondence, financial documents, meeting minutes, memos and other planning and operational documents. Internship and volunteer programs files are included here.

Scope and Contents

Series 3 contains correspondence and readers’ reports of scripts submitted to St. Nicholas for review, as well as artistic files that include staffing, casting, programming, dramaturgy and Theater for Young Audiences documents. Submitted scripts went through a review process usually supervised by long-time literary manager Cynthia Sherman and were given a number rating of 1 to 4, (1 being the highest) and a classification of action taken: Given Encouragement, Personal Contact, or No Interest. Reader’s reports were done according to a form that at minimum, named the title, playwright, and reviewer. Reviews tended to be frank. The scripts in Series 3 were not produced. Researchers should consult the Series 1 by season for scripts that were produced.

Series 4: St. Nicholas School of the Theater Arts, 1974-1982

Scope and Contents

Series 4 contains a range of financial, promotional, planning and course materials related to the theater school run by St. Nicholas Theatre Company. Originally in coordination with Victory Gardens, the educational arm became The School of Theater Arts, offering a two-year course of study for adults as well as summer classes for youth.
