Abstract
Collection consists of approximately 200 ephemeral items such as trade cards, tickets, invitations, postcards and other printed ephemera.
Biographical/Historical
In 1893, Chicago hosted the World’s Columbian Exposition, a World’s Fair celebrating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. The Fair took place in Jackson Park, on Chicago’s South Side, and ran from May through October of 1893. During those six months, more than 27 million people from around the world visited the Fair. Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, and architect and planner Daniel Burnham, collaborated with many other luminaries to bring the Fair into existence.
Scope and Contents
The World’s Columbian Exposition Ephemera Collection consists of approximately 200 items. This interesting array of items distributed to visitors at the World’s Fair of 1893 includes souvenir magazine articles, directories, flyers, invitations, journals, maps, postcards, programs, sheet music and souvenir advertisements.
Souvenir advertisements make up the bulk of the collection and provide examples of late 19th century advertising, as well as insight into the goods and services offered by the businessmen and merchants of the late 1800s. One of the more elaborate advertisements in the collection is that of the Singer Manufacturing Company (sewing machines) titled “Costumes of All Nations.” This item consists of approximately 25 colorful cards depicting people of all nations of the world in native dress.
Perhaps the most personal item in the collection is a journal titled “Vacation Days.” This fifty page anonymous handwritten reminiscence documents the summer vacation of a family as they travel from the east coast to the World's Fair. Although the journal is not signed or identified in any way, it appears to be written by a young boy.
The ephemera collection also includes approximately 41 oversize items. Oversize materials include blueprints and floor plans, illustrations, maps, and newspapers.
