Mission 3: How Do You Escape?

Mission 3 is now closed.

For our third mission, we want to know: what do you do to escape?

You could win a $50 Powell's gift card and be entered to win an Apple iPad Air 2!

The Mission

Escapism is a key theme throughout The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, especially in Part 3. As Joe struggles to feel happiness with his success, finally finding it in the inspiration for the character of Luna Moth, we wondered: what do you do to escape? What are your favorite ways to find peace, joy and contentment?

Share your favorite escape with the OBOC community -- it can be as simple as a tweet about an activity that helps keep you balanced or as involved as taking a photo of a book that you love to escape into, making a list of movies in the catalog that you watch when you want to get away, or creating a playlist of songs that you listen to when you need to take a break.

Background

“Joe, on the other hand, had always been the boy for a party in Prague. He could do card tricks and hold his alcohol; he was an excellent dancer. In New York, however, all this seemed to have changed.”

Part 3 of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, titled “The Funny-Book War,” takes a darker turn. The success of The Escapist is marred for Joe and Sam by how much more success it has brought Anapol; Joe is struggling with his anger and frustration over what is happening with his family in Prague, and his inability to get them out. This anger and frustration has lead Joe to pick fights -- and worse -- with German speaking residents of the city.

At the end of the section, things are looking up for Joe in particular: he attends a party and saves Salvador Dalí; sees Rosa Saks again, who inspires the creation of Luna Moth; finds a way that he may be able to bring his brother to America; and renegotiates pay for himself and Sam, as well as some of the rights to The Escapist.
