The Chicago Latino Chess Championship XXI at the Lozano Branch is right around the corner. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 30, chess players of all ages, from all over, will come to compete.
Last year Ricky Roman won the K-8 Section of the tournament. We reached out to him to ask him some questions about chess and the role it has in his life.
Q: Last year you won the K-8 Section of the Chicago Latino Chess Tournament by winning all your games. Will you be playing in our tournament again this year?
A: I definitely will, this is my favorite tournament. I wouldn't miss it for the world.
Q: How long have you been playing chess?
A: I have been playing chess since I was 4. I am now 12. My father and uncles have gone to this tournament before I was even born.
Q: Do you have a favorite chess piece?
A: I actually don't have a favorite chess piece. I like them all equally. To me, if you use them right, at the right circumstances a pawn can be as valuable as a queen.
Q: What exciting things have happened to you because of chess?
A: Chess has been the greatest influence in my life. I have gone on two trips to Mexico for free. The first in Yucatan and the second was in Guanajuato. I have met many new friends, been able to explore different parts of northern Illinois and have won many prestigious awards.
Q: Who is your favorite chess player of all time?
A: Again, I have no favorite. Each player has their own style, their own strengths and their own weaknesses.
Thanks Ricky! We look forward to seeing you at the tournament!
