Artist Statement
My work is inspired by memory, culture, family and the neighborhood. I use objects and materials in the environment that reflect the past. Growing up in McKinley Park with parents from Pilsen, I would hear stories about my family’s experiences in the neighborhood. As I got older, I became fascinated with buildings, businesses and certain areas that reminded me of my childhood and family history. When I see glass, metal or objects like street signs and benches in my surroundings, I make a connection with my past. My work displays a sense of nostalgia through the eyes of a Mexican-American woman from the South Side of Chicago.
