Beverly Branch hosts an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month art exhibit through the month of May, featuring artist Hiu Lo Wong.
School of the Art Institute of Chicago merit scholarship recipient Hiu Lo Wong has had a lifelong fascination with the energies that come from people interacting with the enclosed spaces around them: “There is always a certain kind of air or atmosphere surround a place. When we visit a new place, we spectate the smell, the light and the mood of a place. It is the first impression we get from it. As I stay in my (room) long enough I am so familiar with the setting that I lose the sense to feel the living place as objectively as I could initially. Then I start to feel unfamiliar with the place. It is similar to ‘looking at yourself in the mirror for too long until the moment you find yourself strange.’ The relationship between the host and her living place is very interactive, in terms of energy flow. Maintaining spiritually awake is essential for me as an artist. It is interesting that the energy in my place keeps changing and I cannot tell what makes it settle.”
