Logan Square Branch hosts a Hispanic Heritage Month art exhibit featuring the work of local artist Jazmin Dua Rivera.
Rivera’s exhibit Ode to Warhol will be on display from September 15 through October 15.
Artist Statement
My art is a form of visual storytelling, interested in conveying moments of surveillance, life and interactions. I work primarily with paint and photography as well as nontraditional materials. The philosophy that everything is a product of an experience frames each work, conveying stories of movement and color through my concepts and ideas.
The Ode to Warhol series is inspired by brands of foods in primarily Latino grocery stores and homes. Mimicking Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup Can, in 2016 I started photographing different aisles of products in Spanish grocery stores. Being Latina, most of our canned products came from local grocery stores in neighborhoods that were predominately Latino. Goya is the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States and the most used product in my home. Growing up my mother and I would go daily to the grocery store to pick up fresh food to cook for an entire family, these products were typically Spanish brands or Goya brands. In this project, I want to glorify the significance these products have on my life and the life of many Latinos.
