Artist Statement
“The paintings were painted mostly in Ireland, but also in Italy and around Catskill, New York. All places I have returned to many times. I am particularly drawn to hilly towns and rugged beaches. Conditions of fog, haze and nighttime are natural conditions that present the landscape in a veil of familiar ambiguity or between-ness. The changing nature of light and atmosphere allow the landscape to be experienced as abstract, and yet particular and very specific. Fog can obscure the landscape form; air and atmosphere become thick and tangible. Vagaries of shifting light make every day different.”
