Clearing Branch hosts an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month art exhibit through the month of May featuring artist Kioto Aoki.
Kioto Aoki's artistic practice revolves around concerns of different modes of perception, resting heavily on the idea of a return to the refined fundamentals. The series ‘Dialogues in Between’ investigates the idea of self-portraiture by refining the relationship of the photographer to the camera. The face is the defining characteristic of the self-portrait, especially the selfie. With these images, Aoki is challenging what it means to look at ourselves face-to-face without presenting herself so straight on, to the external world in the form of ‘reluctant self-portraits.’
