West Belmont Branch hosts an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month art exhibit through the month of May featuring artist Levi Yutuc.
Growing up in the USA as a Filipino immigrant, Yutuc investigates the conflicting ideologies, depictions, and obsessions between the East and the West. As a result, his work is an introspection of personal cultural and social experiences. Currently, he is exploring colorism by creating a body of process-driven pieces reflecting the phenomenon of skin whitening. The action is mimicked using correction fluid to mask distinguishable features of lauan, a species of wood from Southeast Asia. Ultimately, he aims to understand the acceptance, rejection, and transformation of identity to assimilate or differentiate historically and presently.
