Lincoln Belmont Branch hosts a Hispanic Heritage Month art exhibit featuring the work of local artist Raúl Ortiz.
Paintings from Ortiz's exhibit Abstract Landscapes will be on display from September 1 through November 13.
Ortiz will give an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 12 at Lincoln Belmont Branch.
Artist Statement
Raúl Ortiz explores painting by way of process—building up layers of pigment, random mark-making, overlapping shapes, textures, light, scale, incorporating manipulated photocopies of photographs taken on walks during travels and around town, and the use of heightened-color interactions that are derived from the tradition of abstraction. Spontaneity plays a key role in reinterpreting/reframing and updating the landscape with a contrasting contemporary twist.
Ortiz was born in Mexico (Ocampo, Guanajuato) and moved to Chicago when he was 5. He received his bachelor of fine arts in 2001 from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has exhibited at such venues as the University Club of Chicago, the Old Town Art Center, the Rockford Art Museum and the Wright Museum of Art, Beloit, Wisconsin. He also was an artist-in-residence in 2005 at The Cliff Dwellers. He lives and works in Chicago.
