Lincoln Belmont Branch hosts a Hispanic Heritage Month art exhibit featuring the work of artist Richie Morales.
Pieces from Morales' exhibit Consumerism Narcolepsy will be on display from September 15 through October 15. Morales will speak about his work at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 22 at Lincoln Belmont Branch.
Artist Statement
Painting has become my first language. I am a self-taught painter that does not hesitate in his stroke, that explores the accident as a form of communion with the unknown and regularly reflects about the role of art in social justice. Since childhood and between trades of wood and construction work, I have experimented with textures and materials that I have integrated in my painting. My life is marked with signs of social and economical violence and also with legacies of personal and community resilience. The arts are for me the only space where light and darkness, the grotesque and beautiful, love and fear can fusion with each other, giving birth to a fuller whole. Pintar se ha convertido en mi primera lengua. Soy un pintor autodidacta que no vacila en su trazo, que explora el accidente como una forma de comunión con lo desconocido y que a menudo reflexiona sobre el rol del arte para la justicia social. Desde mi niñez y entre oficios de ayudante de carpinteria y albañileria he experimentado con materiales y texturas que integro en mi pintura. Mi vida está marcada con signos de violencia social y económica y también con legados de resiliencia personal y comunitaria.
