Artist Statement
“I was born in Poland, where I lived for 32 years. In 2007, I came to the U.S. and have been living in Chicago since then. English-speaking friends call me Maggie, as it is easier to pronounce. (The exact equivalent of my name is Margaret). I received my master's degree in Poland in teaching English as a second language and I worked for nine years as a teacher. I also studied social media/journalism. Here, in Chicago, I have been working as an office manager, quite a steady and boring job. While living in Poland I never thought of making cards, although my friends believe I inherited talent from my dad and should do something with it. Last summer I decided to give it a try and made my first card. Since then, I have been making cards for different occasions for my friends and family. I also sell them in a boutique with handcrafted items. I treat it as a hobby, but I find it very addictive. It is very relaxing, though. Although it is just a hobby, it gives me more pleasure than a regular job. My friends appreciate it, too, so it brings a lot of satisfaction and every order they place brings a smile to my face. It's like proof that what I do makes sense.”
