Celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week from September 25 to October 1. Join us for special events at libraries around the city, and check out some of our reading recommendations for teens.
This year's theme is Diversity, and we're showcasing all the fascinating perspectives you can find in our city and our world.
Why do libraries observe Banned Books Week? Since information on most topics can be found online, you might be surprised to learn that censorship is alive and well. When someone wants to prevent others from learning about viewpoints or ideas that contradict their personal beliefs, they sometimes try to remove books from library shelves. The American Library Association reports that in 2015 alone, at least 275 book challenges took place in libraries in the United States—that's one challenge every day for nine months.
Like many libraries, CPL prioritizes access for all so that everyone can get the information they want and need. We join libraries all over the globe in observing Banned Books Week each year to draw attention to the issue of censorship and celebrate your freedom to read whatever you like—even if it's controversial.
