Black Music Month began in 1979 with Kenny Gamble, Ed Wright and Dayna Williams developing the idea to set aside a month dedicated to celebrating the impact of black music. The idea to dedicate an entire month to African American musicians, composers, singers and songwriters who have helped shape the lives of individuals for centuries was successfully lobbied to President Jimmy Carter, who on June 7, 1979 formally recognized the cultural and financial contributions to black music.

Since 1979, Black Music Month has been recognized by U.S. presidents, public officials and educators who continue to acknowledge the contributions of black music to our culture and community.
