Our recent poetry program, All Are Sleeping on the Hill, commemorated the Day of the Dead and Halloween by presenting dramatic readings of monologues selected from Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters. These free-form poems chronicle the lives, joys, regrets and recriminations of the dearly departed residents of a small-town Illinois cemetery.
Masters is one of the authors represented in the public art collection 16 Illinois Writers, opens a new window at Near North. Local artist and graphic designer Steve Musgrave created the original collection in 1999. He has since added two more portraits.
Take a look at the portraits next time you're here. Each one has clues to help you identify the author represented. Can you figure out who's who?
