At the end of the month, the Northtown Branch will celebrate its 53rd birthday. Our current building opened January 29, 1962, replacing a small storefront on Devon Avenue.
A 1962 article in The North Town News reported that the building cost more than $230,000 to build. The reading rooms were brightly painted in shades labeled “Adriatic Blue” and “Mikado Red.” The library was stocked with extra copies of popular books, including 13 copies of James Michener’s Hawaii and 15 copies of Lean Uris’ Mila 18.
Stop by and see us as we celebrate another year!
