As part of the 2018 Teen Summer Challenge, Imagine Doing More!, teens at Woodson Regional Library have formed an Indoor Greenhouse Club open to any interested teens.
The club, which meets weekly, began out of conversations in which teens expressed disappointment with the lack of food choices and fresh produce within easy reach of the library. The hope is that by the end of the summer, teens will have the skills and ability to support their own fresh produce at home.
YOUmedia staff and teens are learning alongside each other as they grow plants in the library, and document and discuss their growth and care. Club members are also creating at-home challenges for themselves, including personal lifestyle changes such as recycling and taking shorter showers.
Special projects the club hopes to work on include: making environmentalist paintings and drawings, creating seed paper and seed bombs, recording podcasts, taking photos and developing a blog about "living green," plus going on a field trip for an educational workshop at Chicago Botanic Gardens' Windy City Harvest Youth Farm.
This program is made possible as part of a 2018 Teen Summer Challenge: Imagine Doing More! mini-grant. #ImagineAtCPL #CPLTeens
