The Literature and Language Book Club will meet from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, February 15 in 3N-6 at the Harold Washington Library Center to discuss A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.
This autobiographical novel concerns a young daughter of German immigrants growing up in the slums of Williamsburg, Brooklyn at the turn of the 20th century. Here are discussion questions from the librarian moderator to consider as you read:
- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is considered to be an American classic novel. What is its relevance today?
- Growing in the Nolan family's courtyard is a Tree of Heaven. How does Smith use it as a symbol?
- What would you call your own coming-of-age story if you were to write one? Why?
