Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Public Library Launch “Chicago Book-Wrapped” – A Groundbreaking Initiative Providing Immediate eBook and eAudiobook Access for all

A partnership with OverDrive powers this groundbreaking initiative, beginning with a special eCollection for the Democratic National Convention.

Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Public Library (CPL) proudly announce the launch of “Chicago Book-Wrapped", an innovative popup eCollection initiative that redefines access to literature in the city. Powered by OverDrive, the company behind the library reading app Libby, this initiative eliminates barriers, offering instant access to curated eBooks and Audiobooks with no wait times or library card requirements during the eCollection period. This visionary project not only broadens access to knowledge but also serves as a cultural touchstone, enhancing the experience of Chicago’s most significant events.

“Access to knowledge and information is the foundation of a thriving, equitable, and democratic city,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Thanks to Chicago Public Library and our dedicated librarians, we’re making this powerful initiative possible, ensuring that everyone in Chicago has the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect through universal access to literature.”

Since 2021, CPL has seen a 30% year-over-year increase in eBook and Audiobook checkouts, with Audiobooks experiencing unprecedented growth in the library and publishing industries. This surge in popularity has empowered CPL to make data-driven decisions that cater to patrons’ needs.

“Libraries open doors to a larger world, and as Chicago hosts world-class events, we're connecting our city to the latest guides, local history, and books by key convention figures,” said Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown. “Through our partnership with OverDrive, we're excited to offer this innovative resource to both residents and visitors. With Chicago Book-Wrapped, we continue to lead in helping Chicagoans explore and connect with the world.”

With “Chicago Book-Wrapped, CPL is set to invigorate the city’s literary scene by launching popup eCollections aligned with major events such as NASCAR and the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The first collection, celebrating the Democratic National Convention, highlights Chicago’s vibrant literary heritage, featuring works on the city’s diverse neighborhoods, iconic architecture, and biographies of prominent figures like Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, and Tammy Duckworth.

The inaugural popup eCollection, curated to support the Democratic National Convention, will be available from August 14 to August 27. This specially curated collection offers a wealth of literary resources, making it a must-have companion for both Chicagoans and visitors alike. Currently, CPL offers a robust collection of over 80,000 eBooks, Audiobooks, and magazines on Libby, the library reading app. While these titles are traditionally available to library cardholders, “Chicago Book-Wrapped" introduces a bold new model developed by Chicago Public Library and OverDrive. This initiative allows anyone within the Chicago area to access up to three titles from the curated collection, each available for a seven-day period, without the need for a library card or waiting times.

“CPL’s leadership has crafted an innovative outreach program that welcomes everyone to Chicago with an irresistible offer—free access to popular and bestselling titles that capture the essence of the city,” said Steve Potash, CEO and founder of OverDrive. “We’re proud to support this unique collection of Chicago stories, curated by CPL’s forward-thinking librarians, and made available to all within the city.”

Chicago Book-Wrapped – Our City's Got Stories

At the core of “Chicago Book-Wrapped" is CPL’s deep commitment to connecting people with the joy of exploring Chicago through the power of eBooks. Through strategic partnerships with the Chicago Public Library Foundation, the Chicago Department of Aviation, and the Chicago Transit Authority, this campaign will reach far and wide, with advertisements visible across social media and digital assets at O’Hare and Midway Airports, bus platforms and trains.
