At the start of each workshop, we introduce visitors to our Wall of Information. We’ve included lists of software and file formats, but the section visitors copy is “Organizations We Love.” Now for the roll call!
The Fab Lab at the Museum of Science and Industry: The folks at the Fab Lab have generously shared their time and expertise by training CPL Maker Lab staff on their software and equipment, and by giving us ideas on how to introduce visitors to our space. The lab is part of the MIT network of Fab Labs and has recently expanded its programming.
Pumping Station One: The first hackerspace in Chicago invited us to check out the space and learn how it operates. It’s membership-based and packed to the roof with equipment and knowledge, from high tech to low tech and all levels of making in between. We love when PS:One members stop by so we can pick their brains for advice. Follow PS:One’s mailing list and Twitter, or check out an upcoming open house.
FreeGeek Chicago: Volunteers at FreeGeek learn all about computers, from hardware to software, by taking them apart for reuse and recycling. FreeGeek’s Earn a Box program rewards interested volunteers with their very own refurbished laptop or desktop. During open shop hours, visitors can purchase a refurbished computer or donate a machine to be reused or recycled.
These organizations represent only a few of the many providing Chicagoans a venue to collaborate, share ideas and learn new skills. These groups in particular have had a big impact on our lab, and we’re grateful for their wisdom, experience and support.
Finally, rounding out our current list is the South Side Hackerspace and Workshop 88, although we have not yet had the pleasure of working with them. Help us add to the list here in the comments or when you visit the lab.
