We’re excited to share the news that the Chicago Public Library is a finalist for the Institute of Museum & Library Service’s (IMLS) 2014 National Medal! In 2013, the IMLS awarded CPL the grant that allowed us to create the Maker Lab. You can share your CPL and Maker Lab stories on the IMLS Facebook page.
Sharing Know-How
Friend of the lab Tom Burtonwood posted a Beginner’s Guide to 3D Printing on his blog this week. It’s a great primer if you’re just getting started, and it’s well-rounded enough to remind you of yet another piece of software you meant to try. We are serious fans of TinkerCad in the lab because you can have a printable design in 20 minutes, and the only thing you download is your STL file. Fortunately, we also have a Scupltris power user in the lab, and we’re looking forward to trying out OpenScad because it offers such a different experience.
Speaking of blogs:
- We came across Beautiful Failures: When Additive Printing Goes Wrong. Feel familiar?
- Taylor and Dieter are back for Tuesday night Robotic Knitting. Sign up, stop by to observe or ask questions or watch the excellent video/instructions they’ve put together.
- The Make blog is consistently a source of inspiration, and this week is no different. The Audacity of Making acknowledges the feeling of “staring into the unknown” and the value of knowing we’re not in this alone.
Learning is full of trial and error, failures that lead to successes. The Maker movement puts it all out on the table for us to pick up, take apart and use to solve the problems we want to solve. We hope that we have pointed you to resources, both locally and online, that will help you on your own maker’s journey.
