Looking for credible information on tax issue resolutions? Fearful of an IRS audit? There is a government agency that assists taxpayers with concerns and appeals. This service is free and available to anyone who needs this help.
The IRS Taxpayers Advocate Service (TAS) mission:
“To ensure that every taxpayer is treated fairly, and that you know and understand your rights.”
“The taxpayer advocate offices operate independently of any other Internal Revenue Service office and report directly to Congress through the National Taxpayer Advocate.”
Every state has at least one local Taxpayer Advocate Office: Illinois has two locations, Chicago and Springfield. (Toll-free at 1-877-777-4778). The Taxpayer Bill of Rights, implemented by the TAS, insures that everyone is treated fairly in their dealings with the IRS.
Help and Resources provides links to downloadable forms and information for both individuals and businesses on various issues including Preventing Identity Theft, Suspicious emails and Scams, and the latest on Affordable Care Act filing tips. (Many of these publications are offered in languages besides English.) Current updates on tax issues, newsroom topics, and news essentials are provided on the News and Events page. (Check out the Dirty Dozen Tax Scams for 2015.) Subscribe to eNews for tax law updates and general tax information.
The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service is an easy to navigate, reliable resource, offering unbiased help for anyone seeking assistance on tax issues.
