Teen Read Week 2016 is here, and this year we're celebrating international and multicultural literature with the theme Read for the Fun of It—in every language!
From October 9-15, join us for Teen Read Week events across the city, and check out our Teen Read Week reading recommendations for teens.
Did you know that 22 percent of young people speak a language other than English at home? According to census data, the most common languages spoken in Chicago neighborhoods other than English are Spanish, Polish, Chinese and African languages.
Would you like to learn a new language? We recommend Mango Languages, a resource available with your Chicago Public Library card. You can practice your conversation skills in over 70 languages from Japanese and American Sign Language to Shakespearean English and Pirate.
If you're more interested in learning about other cultures, you can find information on over 200 countries with CultureGrams World Edition. Log in with your library card to read about everything from national celebrities to local recipes like lamb meatballs from Burkina Faso or buuz (steamed dumplings) from Mongolia.
Happy reading!
