Each month we spotlight a teen at CPL.
Self-proclaimed YOUmedia ambassador Kat is very active in YOUmedia and spends a lot of her time tinkering around and creating new things. Having a space to create and meet new people has had quite the impact on her.
She recently shared her thoughts, projects and advice with staff:
This past year I asked my parents for a sewing machine because I wanted to get into cosplay. They were really supportive and since then I’ve been creating various projects. I’ll be going to C2E2 this year with YOUmedia and I’m working on a Ferrus the Cameraman costume, part of a Zelda group cosplay we’re working on. I appreciate Ferrus for his love of trains.
Another ongoing project is recreating movie scenes using cardboard boxes to make all the props. I got the idea after seeing a blog on the internet and wanted to try for myself. I’m currently working on the tangled boat scene, trying to get the lantern lighting perfect.
One thing I like about YOUmedia is that it gives you a chance to meet a lot of people.
My strategy for making new friends is usually to creep them out first. Make an impression, and then you get closer, works every time! At the library you can create your own projects, and often other people invite you to collaborate on theirs. I just recently acted in my friend’s music video, made some chocolates for our anti-Valentines day party and built a fort.
My advice to any new students would be to just be yourself. That and one very important thing: Put sprinkles on it!
Thanks for sharing Kat! Keep doing what you're doing!
