Did you know that when sunlight touches the air in the Earth's atmosphere, it makes the sky look blue, but it really isn't that color?
As part of Imagine Doing More!, we're partnering with Adler Planetarium to offer over 10 Scopes in the City events at libraries across the city for teens to learn fascinating facts through fun, hands-on activities and telescope viewing with Adler staff and interns.
All of Adler's sun-viewing programs at CPL are weather permitting! Check our events calendar, contact your library, or follow Adler on Twitter, @AdlerPlanet, or search #ScopesintheCity for updates.
Check out Adler's challenge to improve your Chicago environment by reducing light pollution in Chicago. Investigate and learn more now:
- Collect and analyze light pollution data using the Loss of the Night phone app, which allows citizen scientists to be part of a worldwide project. See Loss of the Night online tutorial for more information.
- View your Loss of the Night light pollution readings online 24 hours later.
- Visit Illinois Coalition for Responsible Lighting Outdoors to learn more about problems and solutions.
You can pick up the 2018 Teen Summer Challenge, Imagine Doing More! booklet between June 1 and September 1 to find out more about how to take action and get involved.
Finally, after attending a community celebration at your local library to share your story and celebrate your efforts, you can research more projects in which you can make a big difference. And don’t forget that Adler’s teen programs include after-school programs, internships and workshops. Sign up for Adler's email list for details.
