In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, The Personal Myth: Self-Portrait Collage by Yuqing Zhu is on display May 1 to June 30, 2021 in the Popular Library at Harold Washington Library Center.
Yuqing Zhu creates self-portrait collages to uncover a personal mythology, channeling her family's past into an allegory to the future. Inspirations from the Western canon as well as Chinese and Mongolian folk tales populate her work. These elements are cut-and-pasted together with graphite sketches and ornate papers to compose surreal scenes.
The artist will present a workshop, The Art of Collage with Yuqing Zhu, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 22.
